Seeking Forgiveness in Islam โ€” What the Qur'an Really Says

Ayazon ยท Quranic Reflections

There is a version of guilt that keeps you frozen. You circle the same mistake, rehearsing it, punishing yourself with it, convinced that what you did has placed you beyond reach. The Qur'an disagrees โ€” strongly.

"Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves โ€” do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."Az-Zumar 39:53

All sins. The Arabic is comprehensive. This verse was not addressed to people who made small errors. It was addressed to people who believed they had gone too far. And Allah's answer was: you have not.

Tawbah is not a ceremony. The conditions are sincere regret, stopping the action, intending not to return. And then โ€” the part we often skip โ€” trusting that it has been accepted. Staying in guilt after sincere tawbah is not humility. It is a failure to believe in what Allah said.

The door of tawbah is open. It does not have opening hours.
