Marriage in Islam is not just a legal contract. It is described in the Qur'an as one of the signs of Allah โ placed in the same category as the creation of the heavens and the earth.
The word for tranquillity here โ sukoon โ means stillness, rest. Not excitement, not passion, though those have their place. Rest. The kind that comes when you are fully known and fully safe.
The two qualities Allah places in marriage are mawadda โ deep affection โ and rahmah โ mercy. Mercy is the one that carries a marriage through difficulty. The choice to remain gentle when gentleness is hard.
Muslim marriages face real pressures. The Qur'an does not pretend otherwise. But it offers a foundation that, when both people return to it, has the capacity to hold.
